Links Member beliefs Most Latter-day Saints are fully aware that black men were excluded from the priesthood from its inception till It was largely taught in the Church that up through the s blacks were denied the priesthood because they were from the lineage of Cain, who was cursed with a black skin after killing his brother Abel. People were born black because they were less valiant in the pre-existence. The ban on blacks holding the priesthood was reversed due to revelation received by the prophet Spencer W. Kimball in and was not due to the civil rights movement. Prospective converts, even black ones, are not told about the prior priesthood ban on blacks.

Filed under Pagadian City The Philippines, being a country archipelago of islands and seas, have naturally wonderful beaches, some of which are famous the world over. Beaches like Puerto Galera, Boracay, and the various beaches in Cebu rake in tourists from around the world all year round because of their pristine and cool blue waters and fine, white-sand shores. However, if one will just look around more, they will find that there are other less-known but equally beautiful beach spots in other parts of the Philippines.
In Pagadian, in particular, there are beaches and islands that will make one believe that there is such a thing as a secluded paradise on Earth. A nice place to start would be the Dao-Dao Islands some seven to ten minutes away from the seaport, when riding a motorboat. It is a rather big island, with an area size of about 1.
I mentioned that I had given a presentation on dating and marriage to the youth in our ward and shared some of the things I had talked about. As the conversation continued it turned toward some of the sexual issues in the Church that impact dating and marriage such as pornography and, by implication, masturbation and one of the sisters shared with me a familiar story. She said that almost overnight her typically cheerful teenage son had become sullen, withdrawn, and irritable.
She asked him what was wrong and he replied that he wanted to kill himself. Shocked, she probed deeper and discovered that he had been exposed to pornography and was now dealing with all of the emotional, spiritual, and physiological complications that set upon a teenage boy once that genie is out of the bottle. The purpose of this post is to shed some light on what I feel is a far-reaching and avoidable problem in the Church: Which is the more serious problem?
Use of pornography is a serious sin and can lead to other sexual transgression. Avoid pornography at all costs. It is a poison that weakens your self-control, destroys your feelings of self-worth, and changes the way you see others.

See results Things to Do on a Date First, let’s clear up one piece of confusion. Just because Mormons avoid some activities does not mean they’re no fun to be with. Once you hang out with a group of LDS people of any age, you may find them to be as fun and funny as anyone else you’ve met, but also very considerate, caring, supportive of each other, and accepting of others. What do Mormons do for fun? It’s not unusual to find them dancing on weekend nights.

August 12, edited Having just finished a mission a few months ago, let me fill you in on what I saw. Elders who had steady dated up until their missions, with a few exceptions ‘few’ meaning one or two , were distracted by that relationship. Some actually went home over it, most stuck it out but never really committed themselves to serving, some had to end the relationship before they were able to focus, and the one or two managed to adjust quickly.
Their hearts were still at home with their girlfriends, so they weren’t available to give to the Lord. Whether or not anything was inherently wrong with the relationships themselves, they had slowly and quietly become more important than the Lord’s will for most pre-mission steady daters. And that’s a problem. Keep doing what you’re doing. Date others, but by all means go on one together occasionally. Spend some time together as friends.
Don’t worry that you like each other – that’s good! Enjoy it for what it already is, and don’t try to build on that foundation before it’s stable. Write each other when you’re on your missions, but offer support rather than distraction.

Discuss this article or ask questions at the LDS. On a date, each is responsible to help each other preserve their standards and to protect each other’s honor and virtue. Mormon Prophet Spencer W. Kimball stated it this way: Each partner will unselfishly seek the best for the other while they learn to know each other well. Dating before then can lead to immorality, limit the number of other young people you meet and deprive you experiences that will help you choose an eternal partner.
Tragically, [dating] is often misused today by those who either live together for sexual privileges or by those who [date] hastily and marry foolishly. The world may countenance premarital sex experiences, but the Lord and [the Mormon] church condemn in no uncertain terms any and every sex relationship outside of marriage, and even indecent and uncontrolled ones within marriage.
However, the involvement of parents is vital; in that communication and setting boundaries needs to be understood by both parents and youth. Parents do not come with a parenting handbook, which tells them what to say and how to act in every situation, especially when their children begin dating. It is mainly a do-it-yourself project, which takes communication and understanding from parents and youth alike.

Go Forward with Faith A date is a planned activity that allows a young man and a young woman to get to know each other better. In cultures where dating is acceptable, it can help you learn and practice social skills, develop friendships, have wholesome fun, and eventually find an eternal companion. You should not date until you are at least 16 years old. When you begin dating, go with one or more additional couples.
Avoid going on frequent dates with the same person. Developing serious relationships too early in life can limit the number of other people you meet and can perhaps lead to immorality.

As I thumbed through the articles I began to reflect on things I had been taught as a youth that were useless or incorrect. Through my own experiences, as well as those of my friends, I have learned that respect is one of the single most important things to have in any relationship. A person who respects you listens to you when you speak, honors your personal boundaries and beliefs, and is honest and considerate.
When I was newly 16 my mother brought home a highly recommended book about dating , written by an LDS author. Having not read the book herself, she assumed that it would be filled with excellent advice. When I told her what the book actually contained she was as mortified as I was. The lesson that the book taught me?
This book, authored by a man, taught me that the most important thing to every man in every relationship ever was sex. The corresponding desire for women was respect — the highest, most intimate wish of every woman was to merely be respected. The author presented that because in dating relationships men cannot have sexual intimacy, women cannot have respect and they should not expect it. Every human being deserves to be respected in their relationships.
Anytime that is missing, something is wrong.

I have a wonderful success story for you. One of our sons had a great early morning seminary teacher. She said she grew up in an area where there were very few LDS boys to date much like the area we lived in at the time. Her father told her that he wanted her to be able to date, even if it meant nonmembers. He told her to choose carefully who she spent time with, just as she would with a member.

The LDS Dating Crisis
As a borderline narcissistic introvert, you might be surprised to learn that I have friends, even friends from many different lands states and persuasions. But to the point. Here, in no particular sequence of topics, are some observations from students, friends, and neighbors on dating culture among Mormons, and sometimes, others. One friend observed that the experience of two relatives suggests that serious relationships among singles are drying up.
A close friend from his youth married a short time ago, his new wife was his first serious relationship in over a decade. He wonders if the lack of a serious significant other outside of an engagement is now relatively common.

Uchtdorf, November 1st, For the entire talk: Will I ever find my soul mate? There is an old story about a young woman on an archaeological excavation who discovers an ancient-looking lamp. When she rubs it, a genie appears, offering her one wish. She thinks for a moment and asks for world peace — that people would love each other and live in harmony forever. The genie contemplates her request and finally says: The division among the peoples of the world is too deep and has existed for too long.

Oaks spoke to young single adults at a Church Educational System fireside telecast from Oakland, California. Following is an excerpt from that address. Tingey of the Seventy referred to an article in a recent issue of Time magazine. The average age at marriage has increased in the last few decades, and the number of children born to LDS married couples has decreased.
Nov 05, · Take it from me: the counsel to avoid steady dating isn’t only to keep you safe from messing up, but it’s to keep you safe from unnecessary heartache. Protect your heart. Not that she isn’t a great girl, I’m sure she is; but youth and circumstances set a possible relationship up to fail.
Who am I supposed to date if I don’t date non-members? Don’t limit yourself to people in your school. Are there any youth in your ward or stake who aren’t related to you? Are there stakes close by? Is it possible that an area-wide event could be scheduled to help LDS youth meet each other? Talk to your leaders about that. If there really is no one to date in your whole area, maybe you should wait to date.
Instead, develop yourself, read good books, work on talents and Personal Progress, do sports, etc. While dating is fun now, it isn’t necessary. So if there is no one who meets your standards, just have fun with your family and friends until there are some. One more thing, work on reactivating less-active members and do missionary work, though don’t date to share the Gospel.
